![]() ![]() While Seagate and Western Digital compete on hard drives and flash storage, WD has a significantly larger product portfolio due to the addition of SanDisk in 2015. While this trend is expected to continue in future years, the company is facing increasingly intense competition from rival Western Digital. Subsequently, a refreshed product portfolio, a higher mix of flash storage products and healthier selling environment led Seagate’s margins to improve to the low 30s through fiscal 2017, ended June. This led to low selling prices of computer hardware, including storage drives, which led margins to fall to the 28-30% range. Much of the decline was driven by the slowdown in the global PC and laptop market, which is the main consumer of hard drives. Seagate witnessed a decline in revenues through fiscal 20, which was exacerbated by a sustained period of low gross margins.
